PiFi Kit Guide Quick Start

Setting up PiFi Kit

📦 If you don’t have the PiFi kit yet you can get it here — or use our download guide here if you want the software-only version
💡
Before you get going: You’ll need a smartphone, a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, a sufficient power supply (5v3a for Pi 4/27W for Pi 5) and your PiFi Kit

1. Download the PiFi App

To start download the PiFi app. Visit pifi.org/app on your phone or if you’re already on your phone, tap the links below:

2. Insert the AC1300Mbps PiFi USB Adapter

  • Insert the PiFi USB AC1300 Adapter into one of the two Blue USB ports on your Raspberry Pi 4 or 5
💡
🟦 Blue USB adapters on Raspberry Pi are USB 3.0 (with up 10x the transmission speed of the grey USB ports). The PiFi USB Adapter doesn’t currently support the underpowered USB 2.0 ports on Raspberry Pi so make sure you pop it in one of the blue ports

2. Insert SD Card & Cables

image
PiFi Kit uses a USB 3.0 wireless adapter with Raspberry Pi, so the minimum recommended power supply is 5v3a for Raspberry Pi 4 and 27W for Raspberry Pi 5 - see the official Raspberry Pi docs for more info. Using an underpowered power supply could damage the longevity of your Raspberry Pi or accessories.
  • Ensure your Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 is powered off to start
  • Insert the micro-SD card into the Raspberry Pi
  • Insert an ethernet cable into the Raspberry Pi and connect the other end of the cable a LAN port in your internet router
  • Insert a sufficient power supply into the Raspberry Pi and power it on
💡
Important: 🚥 On PiFi - a red/orange LED on Raspberry Pi means VPN is off, and after booting a green LED suggests VPN is enabled. This differs from the usual LED pattern, particularly on Raspberry Pi 5 which suggests it’s in “shutdown state”. So red/orange LED is nothing to worry about

6. Connect to PiFi in WiFi Settings

image
  • Allow up to up to 3 minutes for PiFi to install on your Raspberry Pi (the Pi may turn on or Pi may reboot during install)
  • After three minutes, open WiFi Settings on the same smartphone / device where you installed the PiFi app in step one
  • Allow it a few moments for the networks on your device to refresh
  • You should see PiFi 4 (if using Raspberry Pi 4) or PiFi 5 (if using Raspberry Pi 5)
  • Tap that network to connect to PiFi and enter the default password:
💡
Default password: Raspberry314

7. Open the PiFi app 🎉

You should now be all set - just tap ‘Get Started’ and follow the on-screen steps. If you need help with using the PiFi in-app features check our the PiFi documentation for help, tips and tutorials.
